Where can you go on line to apply for a government grant with out being charged for it?

My husband was laid off recently and I've been unable to work foo about 5 years, and I have heard that the government gives grants to people who need help with thier bills, and things for thier house. Like insulating, roof repairs and just being able to get by until his job starts again! But every time I get an email about the grant s they end up wanting a fee to show you how to obtain one. If I had money for that I wouldnt be looking for a grant in the first place. Is there not a place on the internet where I can get some legit help applying for a grant, without the fee??? Help please!!!
