WHATS THAT FILM CALLED?

must be an 80's movie. A young guy moves to California (i think he's a mechanic or something), moves in with a room mate (i think) meets a really pretty girl things are going good with them, then his room mate moves out and it turns out his room mate has moved in with this girl he has met and fallen for. (the next bit sounds stupid but) He goes round to the girls house and his room mate is there and they are both in their robes, then there's an earth quake then the guy wakes up and it was all a dream and he's back hoe and he hasn't moved to california yet. This movie sounds wacked i know but I know I've seen it before. HELP HELP HELP
